The modern Dankov became the heir of the ancient Donkov, which was part of the Ryazan principality and with it ceased to exist, falling under the onslaught of the Mongol-Tatars. . The oldest attraction that has anything to do with the city is the ramparts and moats of Old Donkov near the extinct village of Streshnevo.
