Historical cities

The oldest city in the Voronezh region is its the administrative center of Voronezh. But in addition to it, six more are included in the list of historic cities with interesting monuments of history and architecture: Bobrov, Boguchar, Borisoglebsk, Novokhopersk, Ostrogozhsk and Pavlovsk. All of them were founded in the late 17th or early 18th century as slobods or fortresses to protect the southern borders of the Russian state from Tatars, nomads and other enemies. The status of the cities was acquired by these settlements in 1779, when the Voronezh and Tambov provinces appeared.

Bobrov

The settlement of the territory of modern Bobrov became massive at the end of the 17th century, when cossacks, peasants and quite free people fled from the central part of the Russian Empire to the south . In 1698 there were already 18 yards here, however, they did not last long: they were ordered to be burned as illegal . Then an attempt was made to settle the fertile lands "from above" - ​​here the northern palace peasants were transported, most of them in the end could not survive such drastic changes .And only in 1705 the settlement became a full-fledged settlement with its "sovereign palace" and the cathedral church .

The modern Bobrov partly preserved its historical monuments and the atmosphere of the county town. Here, till now, one can find ancient merchant houses, manors and shops of the 18-19th centuries. Among them, the Suvorins' house, in which Anton Chekhov stayed, was the first city museum in the Rheinsk cellar of one of the merchants, several buildings of public institutions - a bank, a parish school and a zemstvo hospital.

Pavlovsk

Founded in 1709, Pavlovsk, like many other settlements in the Voronezh region, owes its appearance to Peter the Great. According to historical sources, the monarch chose the place for the future fortress himself - it was very suitable for the shipyard building here. Two years later, when three warships and ten food ships were built here, Pavlovsk even took away the laurels of the most important shipyards near Voronezh and Tavrovo.

Pavlovsk today looks eclectic due to the combination of old houses and ensembles with the construction of the Soviet era and modern buildings. The oldest buildings in the city are the Preobrazhensky Cathedral and the Kazan Church, and the most interesting are the Spiritual School and the buildings of the Merkulov plant.

Souvenirs of the Voronezh Region

From the south of the Voronezh region, in particular, from Boguchar, you can bring beautiful sets or individual copies of wooden dishes, painted in the style of Khokhloma. Fishing here and called - "Bogucharskaya khokhloma", goes to the masters, by the way, very beautiful and original.
