In the south-east of the Pskov region, on the border with Belarus, is Nevel - an ancient Russian city. In the 30s of the 16th century, under the decree of Ivan the Terrible, large guard fortresses were built on the border of the Moscow state and the Lithuanian principality. One of them, the one that was on the shore of Lake Nevel, later became a city.

A bit of history
For its long history the city has repeatedly visited both Polish, Lithuanian, and Russian. Finally, Russia was annexed in 1772. The industry in Nevel was never developed, it lived, mainly due to the trade and production of agricultural products. During the year, 14 fairs were held here, for which sellers and buyers from all over the province gathered.
The city suffered seriously during the Second World War: the two-year occupation and the shooting of the Jewish population will forever remain a mournful page in the history of Nevel. In addition, many city attractions were destroyed during and after the war. The Assumption Church, the Monastery, the Church of St. George, the architectural ensemble of the central square were erased from the face of the earth.

The Nevel Museum of History is located at: ul. Lenin, 14, tel .: (81151) 2-17-84, 2-17-87. The museum does not have any virtual resources, but there are a lot of photographs and documents in the collection that fully reflect the history of the city.
The romantic name of one of the attractions, the Blue Dacha, has a tragic coloring. It was here, one and a half kilometers from the city, that the Nazis built a Jewish ghetto. Here, about 800 people were shot, on the site of their deaths, the local Jewish community established a memorable obelisk. Until now, groups of people interested in the history of the Holocaust in Europe come here.
A farm "Swiss Milk" is located 14 km from Nevel in Gorbenki (route M3 (Kurovska) - P93 (Polotnyany Zavod)): three generations of Swiss farmers founded this farm, having chosen for him a place that is similar in terms of climatic conditions to their native places, and produce a variety of dairy products. Acquaintance with the life and functioning of the farm, riding a tractor, tasting the products produced here attracts many eco-tourism enthusiasts here.
Polotnyany plant
In 28 km from the city there is a well-known museum complex "Polotnyany Zavod" .It was here in the 18th century that A .A.Goncharov founded sailing and paper production and built a luxurious mansion .But the glory of this place was brought not by sails and not by luxury, but by the presence here of the great Russian poet A .FROM.Pushkin and his marriage to Natalia Goncharova .In the estate there are many household things, thanks to which you can get acquainted with the life of Russian noble families, and the old park still keeps traces of the old layout .There are also exhibitions of local artists .

Museum-Estate of Sofia Kovalevskaya
In 37 km from Nevel, in the village of Polibino, there is the Museum-Estate of Sofia Kovalevskaya. It was here that the great Russian mathematician spent his childhood. As you know, parents did not care much for the comfort of their daughter and the walls of her room were pasted instead of expensive decorative material with pages from the mathematics textbook, which had surprising consequences. Museum address: Velikie Luki district, Polibino village; tel .: (8253) 2-95-23, working hours: from 10.00 to 16.30, except Saturday and Sunday.
Grebnitsky Manor
Not far from Nevel you can see the ruins of the Grebnicki manor. Unfortunately, from the classical Russian farmstead of the first half of the 19th century there is not much left: the ruins of the main house, farm buildings and the restored house of the manager. But even this miser gives some idea of the way of life of the Russian nobility.
