Add a review about Palma de Mallorca Cathedral
The main temple of Mallorca and all the Balearic Islands, the Cathedral of Palma de Mallorca, bearing the name of Saint Mary, is a magnificent example of a pompous Gothic architecture in all its splendor. The history of the cathedral begins in 1230, when on the site of the old mosque under the decree of King Jaime I it was decided to build a Christian cathedral, which also was to become the resting place for the kings of Mallorca.
Like some other Spanish cathedrals (we are about Sagrada Familia), the construction of the temple dragged on for many centuries. In modern history, the building was rebuilt several times under the guidance of the architect Jaime Fabre, who was working on the creation of the Cathedral in Barcelona. And the interior of the cathedral was designed by the genius architect Antonio Gaudi. Perhaps, this is one of the brightest cathedrals of the Mediterranean due to the numerous windows, decorated with unusual stained-glass windows of 14-15 centuries.
The outlet above the central entrance is a record 97 meters in diameter.
And the main shrine of the cathedral is the ark of the Life-giving Cross, dating from the 15th century, encrusted with precious metals and stones. In the cathedral samples of jewelry art, paintings and various religious relics are collected. In addition, organ concerts are regularly held here.
