What does the flag of Spain look like? And what does it mean?

One of the main symbols of any state is the flag. In Spain, it is a rectangular panel, the length of which is 3/2 of a width, with horizontal stripes on it. Red, equal in width, are located at the top and bottom. Between them is a strip of yellow, wider than twice.

To the left of the pole, on the yellow field, is an image of the state emblem. It is applied from both sides of the fabric. The height of the image is 2/5 of the total width of the flag, and the axis of symmetry passes half the total width of the panel from its left edge.

The legend relates the symbolic meaning of colors of this flag to its origin. According to legend, one of the kings of Aragon wished to have his banner. Viewing the various designs of the banners, he stopped at one with a smooth golden field. Then he ordered to give a cup of fresh blood of animals and, having dipped into it two fingers, the monarch held them on a yellow cloth, on which two red stripes turned out.

The present flag of Spain was officially approved on December 19, 1981. Before that, the design was somewhat different in different historical periods, but the general appearance (two red stripes and one yellow, the coat of arms of the country on it) has not changed since 1785. Despite the existence of a common national flag, each province has its own.
