In the fortress of the Turkish city of Alanya in the province of Antalya for tourists a new sight was opened: the local authorities allowed to visit the underground water reservoirs that were built Sultan Alaeddin Keykubat in the 13th century
The tanks of the Seljuk period were restored on the initiative of the municipality of the resort city. The warehouses served to satisfy the inhabitants of the fortress in need of water about 800 years ago and are one of the largest structures of its kind.
The upper part of the storages is made of rubble stone, and the main part of the reservoir is carved into the mountain. Altogether there are about 500 similar structures of various sizes in Alanya. The reservoirs were used by local residents to store rainwater until the 1960s, when a water pipe appeared in the city.
