Add a review about Kezmar Castle

Kezmarsky Castle is the main attraction of the High Tatras. Tourists who come to the High Tatras to a ski resort, as a rule, do not deny themselves the pleasure to spend several hours studying the history and architecture of a perfectly preserved castle.

The first mention of Kezmara Castle occurs in 1463. It is for certain unknown where the name of the castle and the settlements around it originated. There are several versions of the history of the name of the castle, most of them are somehow connected with the influence of German culture. The most popular version - the castle got its name in honor of the huge glacier in the Austrian Tirol.

For the construction of Kezmar Castle, a small church was demolished. The owner did not have enough building materials for one wing of the building, and he solved the problem without investing additional funds, using bricks from the building of the religious cult.

To get into the castle, you need to go through the defensive tower, which used to be a lifting bridge. From the courtyard to the castle leads a spiral staircase, from which visitors come immediately to the second floor.

The duration of the tour of the castle is from thirty minutes to an hour.

Part of the facade and interiors are on a long reconstruction, but arches, tall windows and other architectural details immediately draw a picture of the Renaissance. In its history the castle burned twice and was rebuilt several times. At first it was built in late Gothic style, then Italian architects turned it into a Renaissance building. Most of the time, the Kezmarsky Castle belonged to the family of Tekeli. Her coat of arms hangs at the entrance to the fortress.

In Kezmar Castle there are a variety of expositions: from the history of ancient tribes to the decoration of the 19th century. Of great interest is the Town Hall, where furniture and other items are exhibited. For example, there is a ballot box and a crucifix for taking the oath, chair of the city head.

On the territory of Kezmar Castle there is a baroque chapel with a wonderfully elegantly painted fresco. The last major reconstruction was carried out there in 1657, one of the owners of the castle Stefan Tököli II dedicated the chapel to his wife. A young woman died at the age of 21, but managed to give birth to an inconsolable husband six children.
