The center of the Old Town of Bratislava is the Main (once Market) Square. Here, such architectural styles as Baroque, Gothic Classicism are very organically combined, and in the shade of small trees there are small restaurants, shops, cafes and galleries. It hosts Easter and Christmas markets, attracting tourists from different countries.
In 1572, a Roland fountain made of beige sandstone in the Renaissance style was built on the square. His appearance on the main square of Bratislava was timed to the coronation of Emperor Maximilian II. According to popular beliefs, Maximilian II himself ordered to build a fountain after the fire, which broke out during his coronation. Today it is crowned by a statue of the emperor on a high pedestal.
