The second largest city in Slovenia, Maribor is the center of the historical area of ​​Lower Styria. The date of birth of the city is 1254, but in the chronicles this settlement was mentioned and much earlier. The main square is the historical center of the city, here in 1743 a memorial column was erected to commemorate the end of the plague epidemic in the city. The ensemble of the square also includes the church of St. Eloizia, built in the 18th century also in the Baroque style, and the town hall, the main decoration of which is an extremely expressive stone balcony with the coat of arms of the city: a dove flying over the gates of the fortress.

The Church of St. Barbara, built in the 17th century, the Minorite monastery, founded even before Maribor became a city, the chapel of the Salesian sisters - these are the bright, original touches, thanks to which the city has its own face.

One of the most significant monuments of the city is Maribor Castle, built in the 15th century by Frederick III. Now it is difficult to name the architectural style, to which this structure could be attributed: so many times the castle was rebuilt for its long life. From all sides the castle is surrounded by squares: Liberty, General Maistre, Zamkova. It is always crowded, except that it is a historical district, many souvenir shops, shops, cafes and restaurants attract tourists.

University of Maribor
