Nine islands of the Kerkenna archipelago, which lies 25 km from the coastline of Sfax, is an ideal place to escape from the bustling world .Life here seems to have stopped in ancient Roman times: according to one popular version (whose survivability is supported primarily by the local residents), Odysseus was held captive by the nymph Calypso, not on Djerba, but on one of their Kerken islands .And when you come here, you realize that this is just like the truth: it seems that the mythical hero right now lies somewhere behind a palm tree on a beautiful white sandy beach .Otherwise, everything here is also in an antique way: the flat landscape of the islands excludes the very thought of any high-rise construction, and the fishermen still fish in the old fashion, building snares from palm branches .Hotel business on the islands is almost not developed: about six seasonal hotels are ready to accept not very discerning tourists .

How to get to the Kerkenna Islands

Sfax is the only starting point for a trip to Kerkennu .From its port to the archipelago is sent 11 ferries a day in the summer and 4 - in the winter .The timetable is posted on the information board at the port and at the Sfax Tourism Bureau .The ferry takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes in good weather, the fare is about 1, 5 TND for the passenger and 5 TND for the car .In the summer, the last ferry from the islands departs at 20:45 .On board drinks and snacks are sold .Try to take a place on the shady side, otherwise you will have to bake in the sun for the whole ferry .

In summer, it's better not to drive to Kerkenna on a weekend car: the Sfax people go to the islands with their families for the weekend and there is a risk to miss several ferries waiting for free.

Orientation and transport

Of the nine islands of the archipelago, only two are permanently populated: the smaller Garby and the larger Shergi. Ferries from Sfax come to the harbor of the town of Sidi-Youssef (actually, it's just a village around the ferry port) on Garbi Island, where the road leading through the whole Garbi begins and continues on the Chergi along a bulk road built back in Roman times. On Shergi lives most of the population of the islands, here is also the administrative center - the tiny town of Remla.

It is possible to travel along the Kerkenna Islands by bus or shuttle bus. Marshrutki waiting for each ferry and take passengers to Remla, travel to the company "like-minded" costs about 2 TND. There are also usual yellow taxis, payment in them - on the counter. Kerken buses also meet each ferry; they follow in Remla, and one route with the inscription "Hotel" on the windshield rides along the way and to the resort town of Sidi Fredge. The fare is about 1, 5 TND.

And Kerkenna is a paradise for cyclists. The landscape is absolutely flat, without uphill and downhill roads, good roads, but you have to drive on the sun - there are practically no shady roads. You can rent a two-wheeled friend in any hotel for about 15 TND per day.
On Kerkenne everywhere a gentle descent into the sea with a long and smooth lowering of the depth: a hundred meters you can go knee-deep.

Hotels in Kerkenny

The archipelago hotels are located exclusively on the island of Shergi in two towns: the "capital" Remle and the "resort" Sidi-Fredzhe .The most touristy of the Kerkeny hotels is the Grand Hotel Kerkennah in Sidi Fredge, the main contingent of which is the Sfax and the English .The hotel can not boast of novelty, but it stands on one of the most beautiful beaches of the archipelago ."Four" Dar Kerkennah - a small but high-quality private hotel, standing right on the beach in the immediate vicinity of the ruins of the fortress Hissar .You can also stay at the Kerkennah Islands Club Residence, hotel Cercina or Aparthotel Aziz .

Beaches

Kerkenna - one big beach: a magnificent sandy coast and amazing sunrises / sunsets - the main local attraction and entertainment in one person .Everywhere a gentle descent into the sea with a long and smooth lowering of the depth (a hundred meters you can go knee-deep) - for this Kerkenna is loved by families with small children .On the hotel beaches there are umbrellas and deckchairs with mattresses, but most of the coast are wild uninhabited beaches .The best (among the best ones) are located on the northern coast of the island of Shergi, but you can get there only on your own transport or rented for the whole day a taxi .Cape of Bunum - the absolute favorite in terms of picturesqueness and seclusion .

Kitchen Kerkeny

Fish and seafood are the distinctive features of the cuisine of the Kerkenna archipelago. Historically, there was not much meat here - the meager vegetation of the islands does not contribute to the cultivation of fat flocks - but the seafood - more than enough. You can find freshly caught fish cooked on the grill in any of Kerkeny's restaurants - it's guaranteed to be very tasty, albeit without gastronomic flavors.

And on Kerkenne it's worth to order a thick and spicy octopus soup called "chish".

Entertainment, excursions and attractions Kerkenni

Although the role of Kerkenna's main attraction is the sea and beaches, there is a lot of variety of "vegetative" leisure .For example, you can go to the fortress of Bordzh-El-Hissar, built by the Spaniards in the 16th century on the ruins of an ancient Roman building .From its tops you can see a breathtaking view of the endless sea, and at the foot you can still see the ancient ruins: the mosaics that have not lost their brightness are half filled with sand, and the foundation of Roman villas goes directly to the sea .It can be reached on foot along the coast from the Grand Hotel Kerkennah in 40 minutes (distance - 3 km) .

In Attiyah on the east coast there is an old fishing port - you can come here early in the morning, take a taxi, and watch the fishermen go out to sea or ask them to go fishing for a modest fee. There you can agree on a trip to one of the smaller islands - Gremdy: you will be taken there in the morning and delivered back in the evening.
