Dam Square is the central square of Amsterdam and one of the most famous and important places in the city. Dam Square received its name from a dam built on the Amstel River in the 13th century and was formed from two squares - Middeldam and Platz.

In the western part of the square is the Royal Palace, built in neoclassical style, next to it is the 15th century Nieuwekerk church and the Madame Tussaud wax museum

On the opposite side of the square stands a memorial, erected in 1956 in memory of the victims of World War II. Also on the square is the Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky and the department store De Bijenkorf, which turned the Dam Square into a popular tourist area
